SixApart buys and closes down Pownce

Published by gilachess at 6:06 pm under Tech News Edit This

The trend is worrying. Normally a web 2.0 companies acquires another to get it’s services or it’s customers/users. If you do not yet know, Pownce is set to close on December 15th. It was purchased by Six Apart which is the same company that runs Movable Type, TypePad and Vox. The Pownce blog has a post as well as the Six Apart Blog on the sale.

Reading those post, it would seem that Six Apart is just interested in getting the “brain power” of Pownce. Perhaps keeping the users would mean extra cost in sustaining the service. In today’s economic climate the extra cost in maintaining a running service is probably not something any company would like to do unless it was profitable. Also, lots of the services of Pownce are similiar to Twitter which is currently the market leader in this space. It would have been impossible for Pownce to ever come close to Twitter’s success. Hence, I guess it’s not much of a surprise that Pownce is closing down.

Bye-bye pownce. It’s been nice knowing you.
